For this project I collaborated with Louise Zhang from the initial inception. Working from rough sketches of frame designs inspired by traditional Chinese architectural lattices, she wanted them realised in a way that would be both practical to transport and install, but also providing spectacle in a contemporary handmade way.
Together we worked through what was possible within budget and timeframe, and created renders of how her sketches could translate into a finished product. After sourcing timber and stain options, then we moved into planning, engaging joiner/fabricator Kazu Quill to construct the frames based on the finalized designs.
For the installation component, the designs went through multiple drafts and plans based on the available infrastructure of the gallery. The final version of the work utilised extruded aluminium T-slot profiles to minimise fabrication costs and allow the work to be modular in case it was exhibited in the future.
