Untitled Earring (Aldi rabbit medallion replica) , 2019

Cast sterling silver, pharmacy earring, locally sourced chain.

The design of the rabbit earring has been copied from an Aldi “Easter bunny” medallion that came attached to the seasonal chocolate.

After wearing the original medallion as an earring over many years, it became extremely emotionally valuable to me. The idea that this cheap piece of metal that was intended to disposed of had gained so much value to me became interesting and i started to explore the idea of value as a transitory concept.

i remade the earring using the most simple means i could: making an impression of the original medallion into a piece of blue tack and pouring candle wax into it like a mould. I had the resulting wax cast in sterling silver and finished it as a piece of jewellery, hanging it on a sleeper to mimic the way the original was worn by me every day.

For the show “Axes” at Goya Curtain, I wore the earring as a piece of jewellery from my home in Sydney to the gallery in Ikebukuro, Tokyo without removing it.

The earring was shown in the gallery hung on a silver chain, very nearly touching the ground.

The work was gifted to the gallery on the condition that it is never sold in exchange for currency.
